The Invention of a People: Israel or the Palestinians?

Newt Gingrich has been highly criticized for saying during an interview on a Jewish cable channel that the Palestinians “are in fact Arabs,” and that they are an “invented people.” In my post today, I offer three different statements about the invention of a people. Read my post today and then decide which people are an invented people.

    I’ve understood Palestine to be the name of the land where the Cananite peoples dwelt. The name was never associated with a people group, but rather the land. Its similar to Africa being the name of the land mass and the various nations and peoples have their own names. There is not one people group that could be exclusively called Africans. Similarly, the term Palestine was the name of the land. And the people?
