Divine Violence and the Character of God

My book, Divine Violence and the Character of God, deals with violence, both human and divine. In the book I deal with the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, the Canaanites, the conquest of Jericho, and issues such as genocide, holy war, and the idea that God visits “the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

I also write about Jesus as the Suffering Servant, the Sermon on the Mount, the crucifixion of Christ, and how Jesus taught his disciples to be nonviolent in the world.

In his recommendation of Divine Violence and the Character of God, William D. Shiell, President of Northern Baptist Theological Seminary wrote: “In this extraordinary book, Mariottini shows how the warrior God of Mount Sinai is consistent with the grace and mercy revealed in Jesus Christ. Instead of avoiding or excusing Old Testament stories of violence and multigenerational suffering, Mariottini explains difficult passages and corrects popular English translations. . . . This volume is a valuable resource to any pastor or teacher wrestling with suffering in the Bible and the world today.”

Scot McKnight, Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary and the author of more than 60 books, wrote the Foreword to the book. McKnight said that Divine Violence and the Character of God is “a fantastic book.” McKnight’s endorsement reflects the sentiment of those who read a pre-publication draft of the book.
