Amos was one of the greatest prophets of ancient Israel. He was a shepherd from Tekoa, a small town in Judah, located about ten miles south of Jerusalem. Amos was called by God to proclaim a message of judgment to the people who lived in the Northern Kingdom.

Amos was a prophet of social justice. Amos was taken from tending the flock and caring for the sycamore trees to go to Bethel and call the people of Israel to turn from their sins and to establish justice in the land. Amos was concerned with the exploitation of the poor and the social injustices that were prevalent in the Northern Kingdom.
