A few days ago, my son was approached by a woman who asked him if he was prepared for the end of the world. According to this woman, the final judgment will be on May 21, 2011. During the conversation the woman told my son that she had quit her job to spend these last days telling people to prepare for the coming of judgment day.
But how do we know that judgment day will occur on May 21, 2011? Who has set that date? The euphoria that has caught thousands of people and has resulted in billboards across the nation proclaiming the date of the coming judgment is the result of the work of Harold Camping, a civil engineer turned preacher.
Camping has used his mathematical academic background to study the Bible, primarily the chronologies behind the Biblical text. As a result of his study, Camping has concluded that the Bible teaches that judgment day will be on May 21, 2011.
So many people have asked me what I think about this prediction of what will happen on May 21 and the coming judgment that I decided to read some of Camping’s works and ascertain whether his conclusions have any merit and whether judgment day will happen on May 21, 2011.
Camping believes that God has given us a complete calendar from creation to Christ. Included in this calendar is the precise date for the end of the world. It is impossible for me to present all the data Camping has developed to arrive at his conclusions. His argument is complex and the proper understanding of his argument requires a close reading of his research and his conclusions. What follows is a brief summary of the data in his book The Biblical Calendar of History.
First, Camping believes the world was created in 11,013 B.C. He arrives at this date by beginning with the date when the building of the temple began in the days of Solomon (1 Kings 6:1), then tracing the generations of the patriarchs through Adam. His argument is that the genealogies in Genesis 5 do not represent an immediate father-son relationship, but that they are reference points that refer to the time span between one generation and another.
Camping’s argument is a modification of the long accepted chronology of Bishop James Ussher, who, using a father-son relationship in the genealogies of Genesis 5, concluded that creation occurred on October 23, 4004 B.C.
Second, by developing his chronology and correlating it with the Biblical text, Camping concluded that the flood in Noah’s day occurred on May 21, 4990 B.C. rather than on 2348 B.C., the date proposed by Ussher.
Third, according to Genesis 7:10, Noah and his family went into the Ark seven days before the waters of the flood came upon the earth. Beginning with this statement, Camping concludes that since a day with the Lord is equal to one thousand years (2 Peter 3:8), then the final judgment will occur 7,000 years after the Flood, that is, on May 21, 2011.
Fourth, in developing his chronology, Camping also concluded that the 13,000th anniversary of the foundation of the world occurred on May 21, 1988. According to him, on that day the Spirit left the church, the church age ended, and the period of the tribulation began. According to Camping, the period of the tribulation will last 23 years. These 23 years of tribulation began at the end of the church age on May 21, 1988 and will end on judgment day, May 21, 2011.
So, according to Camping, on May 21, 2011 believers in Christ will be taken from life on this world to be with the Lord forever. The rest of humanity, those who died without Christ, will be left behind to experience God’s judgment, which will begin on May 21, 2011. The period of judgment of the wicked will last precisely five months.
After the five months are over, the end of the world will occur on October 21, 2011. According to Camping this period of five months was announced in Genesis 7:24: “And the waters swelled on the earth for one hundred fifty days,” that is, five months of 30 days. The five months are also confirmed in Revelation 9:3-5, which announces a period of torment lasting five months for those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
Thus, in Camping’s calculation, May 21, 2011 will be a dreadful day, but the worse is still to come because on October 21, 2011, God will completely destroy his creation.
What can I say about this whole bunch of nonsense? Time and space will not allow me to point to all the flaws in Camping’s argument. So, I will only discuss a few of the problems I found in Camping’s argument.
1. No one knows the precise day or year of creation. I do not accept the view that the genealogies in Genesis represent father-son relationships, but to believe that they represent generation periods as Camping argued in his book, requires a great deal of juggling of the Biblical evidence.
2. It is impossible to say with any degree of certainty that the flood occurred on May 21, 4990 B.C. To accept such a date for the flood, then one must accept Camping’s chronology in full, a chronology which rests on a very weak foundation.
3. There are some basic flaws in Camping’s chronology. Let me mention just two. Camping places the fall of Samaria, the capital of the Northern Kingdom, in 709 B.C. This date contradicts every historical document, including Assyrian records. The historically accepted date for the fall of Samaria is 722 B.C.
Camping said that Christ was born in 7 B.C. and that he was crucified in 33 A.D. This means that Christ was 40 years old when he died. But Camping’s numbers contradicts what the Bible says about Jesus’ ministry: “Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his work” (Luke 3:23). Jesus’ ministry lasted about three and a half-years.
4. The Bible is clear about the return of the Lord: “But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Matthew 24:36). If the Father in heaven did not reveal the day of Christ’s return to his angels nor to his own Son, what makes Camping such a special person that God chose to reveal this mysterious date to him?
The Bible speaks of true prophets and false prophets. The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah: “When the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet” (Jeremiah 28:9). So, on May 22 we will know whether Harold Camping is a true prophet or a false prophet.
About false prophets, the Bible says: “Any prophet who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak–that prophet shall die” (Deuteronomy 18:20).
Speaking to the false prophet Hananiah, the prophet Jeremiah said: “Listen, Hananiah, the LORD has not sent you, and you made this people trust in a lie” (Jeremiah 28:15). I believe Camping’s predictions are lies, that he is deluding God’s people by speaking visions of his own mind, not from the mouth of the Lord (Jeremiah 23:16).
I do not wish that the Biblical injunction against false prophets be applied to Camping on May 22, 2011. However, there is one thing I can say about May 21, 2011: I am quite sure that the Lord is very upset about this nonsense.

Similarly, and I’m sure this would sound odd, but I’ve also thought that if God were to play a practical joke on someone, it would be done in the same variety of humour as the person on whom the joke was played (how more could a person appreciate a joke played on them than with their own kind of joke?).

My problem is, that when it comes to deceiving people and when it comes to the eternal destiny of individuals, God does not play practical jokes. When it comes to matters of life and death, the situation becomes serious. This preacher is deceiving thousands of people and this is no laughing matter.

It is amazing how often Christians fall for lies against which there are SPECIFIC AND EXPLICIT VERSES in the Bible. Someone comes up and says “I’m the reincarnation of Jesus Christ” and whoop, he has a thousand followers. And its so easy to just open the Bible and read the words of Jesus Himself: “If they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”
This case is the same thing – “No one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father”.
I loved the part when you say “what makes Camping such a special person that God chose to reveal this mysterious date to him?”.
And here’s another explicit verse: ” Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction”.

The problem with people who are deceived by these false preachers is that their knowledge of the Bible is so minimum that they allow themselves to be deceived by anyone who comes proclaiming something new. We need to teach the Bible to people and this is what I try to do with my blog.

Thanks for this post Claude. I really appreciate your clear thinking and comments on this matter. What came to mind is that Harold Camping is not the first one to predict a date for the world to end, and I’m sure that there will be many more like him in future. It is perhaps a clear sign that we are living in the end times that Jesus spoke off in Matt 24:10-11 “At that time … many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.”

You are perhaps the first realistic response to all of this I have seen yet. I am a Christian but have not practiced it all my life until January. I have realized he has always sent someone in my life at different times and realized it was for a reason.
Now on this subject, I do feel God must be so angry on how one human being can tell everyone something and it spreads like a disease. I believe what the bible says, and not what one person says. Although, on a brighter note, yes, i would like to feel comfortable that God is laughing at this man so as not to put a thought of judgement of anger towards him…and yes, i do know God says, ‘beware of false prophets’ especially if they have falsely lied before.
Sad, how some people would do whatever it takes to attain glory in this world. When only one man, God himself should be glorified. Thank you for your honest and and understandable oppinion, it has eased my anxiety and realized even more that the only thing I can believe is the Bible and pray only!

I believe you are quite correct on the “people are looking for someone to lead them.” Your statement reminded me of a song that makes a similar statement (“United Front” by the group Arrested Development) and fits the current situation. The song says, in part:

This sort of reminds me of the Millerite movement and the “Great Disappointment.” The dates that floated around by them were March 21, 1843 through March 21, 1844, then a more specific April 18, 1844, but then finally they settled on October 22, 1844. However, on Oct 23, not all of them were feeling silly (they were confused and disappointed, for sure), but they looked at themselves to find out where they themselves had messed up. As a result, we now have a few handfuls of adventist and non-adventist churches that grew out of that day-after (groups such as the Seventh-day Adventists, Church of God International, and eventually the Branch Davidians out in Waco, TX). Even some of the Bahá’í claim to have some kind of a connection to the Millerite predictions. Odd.
Isn’t Harold Camping’s method to come up with a date similar to William Miller’s (I’m not familiar enough with either person’s method, but there sounds like there is something similar going on with calendars and days being days).
So, it may be interesting to see what happens after May 21st this year, some of them may try to build something new out of it.

In a previous comment on this post that appeared on my Facebook page, I mentioned the “Great Disappointment.” Camping and the Millerites have a lot in common, since they develop their own king of calendar in order to help them predict the coming of Christ. There are several modern groups who have discovered a hidden calendar in the Bible by which they can relate the Bible to things of the past or to aid them to discover things about the future. All these attempts have failed. In 1992 a Koren pastor, based on the teachings of Daniel, predicted the coming of Christ for October 23, 1993. That also failed as will Camping’s prediction.

I do want to say that while I believe God has a sense of humor, I don’t see how it can be applied to this situation. The lie that is being told here by Harold Camping is effecting a lot of lost souls. Those souls belong to God therefore: Matthew 18:7 should be applied here, It says, “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea.”
I do not think God takes it lightly either when we are warned per Revelation 22:18,19
“I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book; if anyone takes away from the words of the book of the prophecy, God will take away that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
While it may amuse others to read this nonsense and know it as a lie and just laugh it off. I do not think God laughs it off. Souls are at stake here, the souls that trust this man to tell them the truth and they want to know God because they are searching for God and they are being mislead.
I think we need to call it what it is and what it is, is a false prophecy and as such, God is not laughing, those lost souls are His.

Thank God for Professor Mariottini and the gift of wisdom and words God has put in your heart and you have given to us in this article, any you many other insightful blogs.
I was listening to a Harold Camping broadcast this week, to determine where he was getting his information, and how he was affecting other’s beliefs. It was a shame at how he manipulated callers, however there were a couple of lights that made me smile.
One caller asked Mr. Camping to consider the truth in his preaching when he awoke on May 22nd. She also said she would hope other people would join her and pray for him and for his eyes to be opened to his deception.
Another caller asked Mr. Camping why he was still taking monetary contributions if indeed the judgement day was May 21st. Who was going to run Family Radio? I though (in jest) of sending a post-dated check for May 22, 2011…wonder if it would get cashed?

There is no reason to be scared. First of all, if you read my post carefully, you will discover that what this preacher is teaching is not true. This is a bogus prophecy that God will not honor. Do not be scared by something that is false. Second, our faith in Christ gives us the certainty that whenever the Lord comes, we will be with him. Faith in Christ casts out fear. Remember what the Apostle John wrote: “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18).

Harold Camping has also “predicted” the time would be 6:00 in the evening – where 6:00 would be based on the place one was on the planet. Ie the east coast would receive judgement before the midwest; Europe before the east coast, etc.
He based this off of two passages, one Old Testament and one New Testament. The New Testament verse he quoted was Mark 13:35 (Camping uses KJV, so I’m using it here) “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning.” He picked “at even” becuase the others didn’t work? Did he not read the verse?…’ye know not’ It is a shame people hear this and follow his twisted reasoning, or no reasoning at all.
The Old Testament passage he used was when Elijah battled the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18). v.36 describes Elijah making his watered down dacrifice, which God accepts, at the time of the evening sacrifice. Camping transfers this to the time of judgement being at 6:00 pm. That seems like a lot of leaps?!

Professor Mariottini: I thank you so much for your explanation about why Mr. Camping is so wrong. I do know all the Bible verses you mentioned and, of course, have not believed what Camping says, but it was good to finally hear someone explain the “whys” of the mistakes in his predictions. I have not heard that from anyone else. Another thing I want to say is that I respect and appreciate so much your answer to the person who was still afraid, and you told him what to do to be saved. My goodness, instead of Family Radio and Mr. Camping telling all his nonsense, constantly quoting Old Testament Scripture and yet still asking for donations, why aren’t they telling people how to be saved?

I feel so bad, and maybe this is awkward of me to even reach out to you. I found out last night about this whole ordeal, and had a horrible panic attack. But when I read your blog, I feel a bit calmer, but altogether i’m just feeling so confused, worried, and scared. I’m 25, and i’ve had these fears in me almost all my life and I wish I wouldn’t. Thank you for contacting me. First, let me say that there is nothing to worry about May 21. Nothing will be happening on that day except for the person who is scaring a lot of people with falsehood. Second, this kind of panic attack and apprehension about the future comes to people who do not have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The best way to prepare for the day of judgment is by confessing your sins to Jesus Christ and by accepting him as your Lord and Savior. Allow me to quote the Bible about Jesus and his love for you. The Bible says:
“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the One and Only Son of God. This, then, is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. (John 3:16-19).
So, you can see that if you believe in Jesus Christ you have eternal life. Thus, people who know Jesus do not have to be afraid because Jesus gives us the assurance that in life and in death he is always with us. I am absolutely in love with your opinion. Why? Because mine is exactly the same. My friends came to me, frightened by the matter, and I simply pointed out that Camping is not God, and only God decides and knows the date of Judgement and the end of His creation.
My words eased them, and seemed to open doors in their minds. It seems as though next time, they’ll turn to the Bible instead of falling into a false prophetic trap.
When I actually heard of Harold Camping and his false prophecy, I was infuriated. This man who had once already predicted the world’s ending in 1994, was doing it again. I was fuming. It did not scare me, though. Because I have complete faith in my God and his teachings. I am not gullible like all the others. This could be because of my Catholic Education, or it could be because my family is devoted to God. It’s probably both.
I put all my trust and faith in my LORD. He is kind and compassionate, and only strikes a blow when he needs to. He loves

Thank you for your comment. People should have known that the man who failed once would fail again. Those whose faith in in the LORD have nothing to fear. This is the reason faith is so important in times of crisis.

*Only strikes a blow when He needs to. He loves His children deeply, and would never put His own words to a man who goes against his Biblical teachings. I honestly think God is upset by these false prophets leading His children astray.
Judgement Day will not happen anytime soon. We will never really know when or what time. But I have faith God will do it when He sees that there is no better future for His children. When He can no longer see good in this world. And I still see a very big amount of good.

God was angry with the false prophets of the Old Testament and he is angry with false prophets today because they do not proclaim the word of the Lord but visions of their own minds. I am glad I was able to help people as they struggled with this issue.

Thank you for your straightforward (and Biblically documented) dismissal of this fear inducer’s prediction.
I won’t speculate on what God is thinking about all this. I am confident that God will take the appropriate measures.
I pray, however, that some good will come from this, and that God can turn this into a positive episode. I know that this caused me to re-examine and hopefully strengthen my relationship with The Almighty. I also pray that the Lord will treat these misled souls gently, and use this to guide them in the way that they should go.
Most of all, I pray that this false prediction makes people realize that Satan is real and active in the world today, and that we must constantly be on guard. Satan is the one laughing.
